Iranian state television announced on Sunday that Mojtaba Khamenei has been officially named the successor to his late father, marking a significant shift in the nation’s power structure. The appointment follows the death of the previous supreme leader, who was killed in an Israeli strike at the onset of the current conflict.

Mojtaba Khamenei has been viewed as a primary contender for the role for several years, though he has never held an elected office or a formal government appointment.

His rise to the highest position in the country places him at the head of a political and religious hierarchy where the supreme leader maintains final authority over all major state matters.

As the new leader, Khamenei now holds command over the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This elite paramilitary force, which operates independently of the traditional military, answers directly to the supreme leader.

This transition of power means that the younger Khamenei will now dictate the country’s central war strategy and foreign policy.

State media reports confirmed the decision on Sunday, though they did not elaborate on the specific internal process used by the Assembly of Experts to finalize the succession.
