PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – With flood mitigation becoming a central issue for coastal communities, Pinellas County officials are calling on residents to participate in a crucial discussion about the region’s vulnerability to rising waters.

The county has announced a virtual public meeting set for Jan. 13 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. The session aims to present the findings of a recently completed Flood Vulnerability Assessment, offering the public a look at the modeling used to predict risks during severe storms and heavy rainfall.

The primary focus of the assessment was to identify threats to critical infrastructure—specifically roads and emergency facilities—ensuring that essential services can remain operational during disaster scenarios. The study is not just a precautionary measure; it is a state-mandated requirement for Pinellas County to remain eligible for specific flood risk reduction grants.

While the meeting is open to the general public, officials are specifically urging attendance from business owners and residents in identified high-risk zones. These areas include:

  • Belleair, Belleair Beach, and Belleair Shore
  • City of Pinellas Park
  • Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores
  • Madeira Beach
  • North Redington Beach, Redington Beach, and Redington Shores
  • Flood-prone sections of Unincorporated Pinellas County

This is an opportunity for locals to see exactly where the county stands on flood resilience and what is being done to harden infrastructure against future storms.
