Israel Eliminates Hezbollah’s Top General With Targeted Airstrike In Beirut

Israel launched a targeted airstrike into the heart of a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut on Sunday, killing the group’s highest-ranking military commander, Haytham Ali Tabatabai. The operation marks the most significant blow to the militant group’s leadership since a ceasefire halted major combat operations a year ago.

Hezbollah confirmed the death of Tabatabai, along with two other commanders, in a strike that shattered a five-month lull in attacks on the Lebanese capital.

The missiles, launched by the Israeli Air Force, slammed into the fourth and fifth floors of a ten-story residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, the attack left at least five people dead and more than 20 wounded.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated he personally authorized the operation based on recommendations from defense chiefs. He characterized Tabatabai as the “chief of staff” who was orchestrating the terror organization’s rearmament.

“A few hours ago, the IDF eliminated Ali Tabatabai, the chief of staff of the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” Netanyahu said. “Tabatabai is a mass murderer. His hands are soaked in the blood of many Israelis and Americans.”

A Fragile Peace Tested

The assassination comes amid rising tensions. In recent weeks, Israel has intensified strikes in Lebanon, citing intelligence that Hezbollah is attempting to rebuild its military capabilities.

Israeli intelligence officials described Tabatabai as the primary obstacle to the Lebanese government’s disarmament efforts. They allege he was the loudest voice within the organization pushing to scrap the year-old ceasefire and resume open warfare with Israel.

Following the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement declaring they had “eliminated” the commander who oversaw most of Hezbollah’s units. “The IDF will act against attempts to rebuild and rearm Hezbollah and will operate forcefully to remove any threat against Israel,” the military stated, while paradoxically noting it remains committed to the agreements previously reached between the two nations.

Washington Left in the Dark

The strike appears to have been conducted without prior coordination with the United States. A senior U.S. official confirmed that while Washington was aware Israel planned to escalate operations against Hezbollah generally, they were not briefed on the specific target, location, or timing of Sunday’s attack.

“We were informed immediately after the strike was carried out,” the official said.

The Target

Tabatabai was a long-sought figure by Western intelligence. He served as the number two figure in the organization, answering only to political leader Naeem Qassem. He assumed the role of military leader only after Israel assassinated his predecessors.

His notoriety extended beyond the region; the U.S. State Department designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2016, offering a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

“I thank the IDF and the security forces that carried out a professional, accurate and successful operation today,” Netanyahu said. “The policy I am leading is absolutely clear: Under my leadership, the State of Israel will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its power and we will not allow it to pose a threat to the State of Israel again.
