Ignatius stated that the interview provided distinct insight into Smith’s character and professional mindset during a period of significant public scrutiny.
According to Ignatius, the interview countered prevailing public narratives regarding the former special counsel’s motivations.
“Eugene, I had the same feeling listening to Jack Smith,” Ignatius said during the broadcast. “I was reminded this is a career prosecutor. He’s talking about how to rehabilitate, how to rebuild the Justice Department.”
Ignatius noted that Smith emphasized the ongoing work of career attorneys within the department. He referenced Smith’s past bipartisan prosecution record as evidence of his institutional focus.
“He says, I was for five years the head of the public integrity section prosecuting Republicans, Democrats, everybody,” Ignatius stated. “I stand for, he’s in effect telling us, the rule of law and we’re gonna rebuild that.”
The commentary highlighted Smith’s demeanor while managing high-profile legal challenges and public pressure. Ignatius observed that the former special counsel appeared focused on broader institutional goals rather than personal or political setbacks.
“He’s not a defeated guy,” Ignatius said. “He’s facing enormous pressure himself, but his thoughts, you know, we’re with his colleagues, we’re with the country, we’re with the rule of law. So, Jonathan, you know, that interview is pretty powerful, but I think we got a sense of who Jack Smith is in his comments under pressure.”
Ignatius concluded his analysis by contrasting Smith’s actual remarks with his public reputation among critics.
“That’s pretty interesting,” Ignatius said. “This is not a snarling, anti-Trump guy that we’ve been led to believe. This is a career public prosecutor trying to do his job.”
