Jail Cell Death Ends Case For Georgia Triple-Shooting Suspect

The man accused of orchestrating a violent shooting spree across the Atlanta suburbs last week, which claimed the lives of three people, has died while in custody. Authorities confirmed that 26-year-old Olaolukitan Adon-Abel was found unresponsive in his cell at the DeKalb County Jail around 6:48 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts by detention staff, Adon-Abel was pronounced dead approximately thirty minutes later. According to a formal statement released by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, “There is no indication of criminal activity or foul play.”

Deputy Chief Investigator Jess Dillard of the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office noted that while an investigation into the cause and manner of death is underway, the process—including lab testing—could take “months to complete.”

The death brings a sudden close to the legal proceedings following a chaotic morning on April 13 that left three families grieving. Adon-Abel was charged with the murders of 31-year-old Prianna Weathers, 48-year-old Tony Matthews, and 40-year-old Lauren Bullis, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) auditor.

The attacks occurred miles apart in a sequence that investigators have yet to fully explain.

The violence began just before 1 a.m. in Decatur, where Weathers was shot and killed near a restaurant. She leaves behind a 12-year-old son. Roughly an hour later, the gunfire moved 15 miles northwest to Brookhaven.

There, Tony Matthews, a welder described by his sister-in-law Miranda Matthews as “the type of person who would help anyone,” was shot multiple times near a grocery store. His widow is now left to raise their 10-month-old child alone.

The final attack took place shortly before 7 a.m. in Panthersville, over 10 miles from the previous scene. Lauren Bullis was shot and stabbed while walking her dog. Friends and colleagues remembered Bullis as an avid runner and traveler who worked as an auditor for DHS.

The case had already drawn national attention before Adon-Abel’s death. The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement criticizing the previous administration’s immigration policies, as Adon-Abel, originally from the United Kingdom, had been granted U.S. citizenship in 2022.

While the legal case against the suspect has ended, police have stated that the motive behind the choice of victims remains unclear.
