Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville issued a blunt forecast on Tuesday, claiming President Donald Trump will eventually resign to shield his family from aggressive congressional investigations following the 2026 midterms.
Speaking in a video posted to YouTube, Carville argued that a newly empowered Democratic opposition would pivot their focus away from the Oval Office and toward the President’s adult children and their spouses.
Since Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, congressional Democrats have already floated several impeachment resolutions.
These efforts have centered on the administration’s strict immigration policies and the military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025. However, Carville suggested that the political pressure will escalate significantly once lawmakers begin looking into the family’s financial dealings.

“The Democrats are going to investigate you to no end,” Carville said, specifically referencing the roles of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. He dismissed the idea of post-election “collegiality,” calling any pretense of cooperation between the parties “bullsh**.”
The strategist warned that the scope of these investigations would go beyond domestic policy, touching on potential legal vulnerabilities abroad.
Carville claimed the President’s actions in Iran are “getting really, really, really close to war crimes,” and suggested that Democrats would refuse to provide legal protection if the International Criminal Court in the Hague took action.
Trump, who faced multiple indictments following his first term—including cases brought by Alvin Bragg, Jack Smith, and Fani Willis—now faces a strategic “deal,” according to Carville. The predicted endgame involves Trump stepping down in exchange for a pardon from Vice President J.D. Vance.
“You’re going to cut a deal and you’re going to resign and J.D. is going to pardon you,” Carville said, though he noted a significant catch in his theory.
He reminded viewers that a presidential pardon cannot reach state-level charges or international prosecutions. “They can’t pardon you for state crimes. They can’t pardon you in the International Criminal Court. They can’t pardon you for any of this.”
