Longtime TV personality Jerry Springer, who pioneered the high-energy, often-profane genre of confrontational daytime television, died Thursday after a bout with cancer, his representatives said.

Springer was 79.

Jerry Springer was a British-born American broadcaster, journalist, actor, producer, lawyer, and politician. He served as the 56th Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978.

He was best known for hosting the tabloid talk show Jerry Springer between September 30, 1991, and July 26, 2018, and debuting the Jerry Springer Podcast in 2015. From 2007 to 2008, Springer hosted America’s Got Talent, and from September 2019 until 2022, Springer hosted the courtroom show Judge Jerry.

Springer was born in London, England, to a Jewish family. He moved to the United States with his family when he was five years old. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in political science and from Northwestern University School of Law with a law degree. After law school, Springer worked as a lawyer and a politician. He served as the Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978.

In 1991, Springer began hosting the tabloid talk show Jerry Springer. The show was known for its outrageous and controversial topics, such as infidelity, domestic violence, and adult entertainment. The show was a ratings success, and it made Springer a household name.

Springer retired from hosting The Jerry Springer Show in 2018. He continued to work in television, hosting the courtroom show Judge Jerry from 2019 to 2022. Springer died on April 27, 2023, at the age of 79.
