From American Dream to Mexican Reality: Boxer’s Swift Fall from Grace
Just days after stepping out of the ring from a high-profile bout with Jake Paul, famed Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has found himself in a different kind of fight – one that could land him behind bars in Mexico.
Federal officials announced Thursday that Chávez Jr. was arrested in Studio City, California, for illegally overstaying his U.S. tourist visa and is now slated for deportation, where he faces serious organized crime charges, including firearms trafficking.
The arrest on July 2 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers comes as a stunning blow to the former middleweight champion, who fought Jake Paul in Anaheim, California, on June 28.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Chávez Jr. entered the U.S. legally in August 2023 on a tourist visa that expired in February 2024, but remained in the country unlawfully.
But the plot thickens beyond an expired visa. Authorities revealed that Chávez Jr. has an active arrest warrant in Mexico.
The charges are massive: involvement in organized crime and the trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. Even more startling, federal officials stated he is believed to be an affiliate of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.
“This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active arrest warrant for trafficking guns, ammunition, and explosives was arrested by ICE. It is shocking the previous administration flagged this criminal illegal alien as a public safety threat, but chose to not prioritize his removal and let him leave and COME BACK into our country,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over.”

On January 22, 2012, California Highway Patrol arrested Chavez and charged him with DUI alcohol/drugs and Driving Without a License. On June 23, 2012, the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, convicted Chavez for the offense of driving under the influence of alcohol and sentenced him to 13 days in jail and 36 months’ probation.
On January 14, 2023, a District Judge issued an arrest warrant for Chavez, for the offense of organized crime for the purpose of committing crimes of weapons trafficking and manufacturing crimes, in the modality of those who participate in clandestinely bringing weapons, ammunition, cartridges, explosives into the country; and those who manufacture weapons, ammunition, cartridges, and explosives without the corresponding permit.
On January 7, 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Chavez and charged him with Illegal Possession of Any Assault Weapon and Manufacture or Import Short Barreled Rifle. The court convicted Chavez of these charges.
The rapid turn of events, from a boxing spectacle to an international criminal apprehension, has sent shockwaves through the sports world and beyond. Chávez Jr., son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez Sr., now faces a future far more challenging than any opponent he’s met in the ring. His expedited removal to Mexico is underway, where he will confront the serious allegations laid against him.
