The Alex Murdaugh high-profile murder trial resumed Monday in Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, with the defense planning to wrap up by early afternoon after jurors heard from more than 70 witnesses.

On Monday, the judge ruled that jurors in the double murder trial will head to Moselle, South Carolina, where Paul and Maggie Murdaugh were shot to death.

“We believe it would be useful for the jury to visit Moselle, both the area of the kennels and the house, just to get some understanding of the spatial relationships,” attorney Dick Harpootlian told Judge Clifton Newman before the jury entered the Colleton County courtroom.

Judge Newman granted the request but details on when the approximately 20-minute drive there would take place are not known.

Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said in court the defense expects to rest by the end of Monday.

The prosecution said it will have a few further rebuttal witnesses, with the aim to move to closing arguments on Wednesday.

The final witnesses come after Murdaugh, 54, took the stand on Thursday and Friday to forcefully deny that he killed his wife Maggie, and his son Paul, who were both shot dead at the dog kennels at their family estate on June 7, 2021.

Alex Murdaugh has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and two weapons charges in the killings.

“I didn’t shoot my wife or my son, anytime, ever,” Murdaugh said.

Murdaugh originally said that he was not at the kennels that night and that he had returned from a visit to his mother’s home to find their dead bodies, but last week admitted that he had been at the kennels and that he had lied to police about his whereabouts.
