Margaret E. Shafe Convicted of Second-Degree Murder After Shooting Husband in the Presence of Minor Children
A Kansas woman was sentenced to 293 months in federal prison today for the second-degree murder of her husband, a U.S. Army soldier, at their home on the Fort Riley military installation.
Margaret E. Shafe, 31, received the nearly 24-and-a-half-year sentence following her conviction by a federal jury on February 14, 2025. Shafe was found guilty of killing her husband, Greg Shafe, in February 2024.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed the disturbing nature of the crime: Shafe shot her husband in the face while the couple’s two minor children were present in the home.
U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser issued a statement following the sentencing, emphasizing the brutality of the act.
“Margaret Shafe deserves to go to prison. The evidence in this case showed she murdered her husband while the couple’s two young daughters were in the home,” Kriegshauser said. “The Court heard brave testimony from Ms. Shafe’s own daughter who witnessed her mother shoot her stepfather in a fury.”
The case was investigated by a joint team including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division, and Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Walton and Lindsey Debenham, along with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Graham, successfully prosecuted the case.
