Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted to a local hospital Monday night after dealing with a bout of the flu over the weekend. His office shared the news on Tuesday, noting that the 83-year-old lawmaker decided to check himself in as a precautionary measure to ensure he receives a full evaluation.

While news of any hospital stay for a senior official can spark concern, his spokesperson, David Popp, struck an optimistic tone. Popp mentioned that the Senator’s outlook is positive and that he is staying in constant contact with his staff.

According to the statement, McConnell is thankful for the medical team looking after him and is already looking forward to getting back to his work in the Senate.

This health update comes as McConnell prepares for the final stretch of a historic career. Last year, he announced that he would not be seeking re-election in 2026, marking the end of his time as the longest-serving party leader in the history of the U.S. Senate.

For now, the focus remains on his recovery as he serves out the remainder of his current term.
