The Minnesota Vikings are officially moving into the 2026 offseason without a designated starter under center. Despite the high-profile arrival of veteran Kyler Murray, the organization intends to hold a genuine, open competition between the former Pro Bowler and incumbent J.J. McCarthy.
NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero broke the news on The Rich Eisen Show, clarifying that the front office is not simply handing the reins to Murray.
“They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy,” Pelissero said. “And both these guys are going to go into this believing they’re gonna win this job.”
The decision follows a rocky start for McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in 2024. His first two years were plagued by a missed rookie season due to a knee injury and multiple setbacks in his sophomore year. In 10 starts last season, McCarthy posted a 6-4 record but struggled with 12 interceptions and a 57.6% completion rate.
Murray joins the Vikings on a league-minimum deal after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. While he brings seven years of experience and two Pro Bowl nods, he is also coming off an injury-shortened 2025 campaign. In five starts for Arizona last year, Murray threw for six touchdowns and three interceptions before a foot injury ended his season.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell signaled this move in January when he called for more depth and competition in the room. Interim general manager Rob Brzezinski later noted in February that the team would “explore every opportunity” at the position.
The looming battle has already caught the attention of the locker room. Star receiver Justin Jefferson remarked that it was “good for J.J. McCarthy to feel ‘pressure’ Kyler Murray brings to the Vikings’ QB room.”
According to Pelissero, the coaching staff is heading into the summer with no preconceived notions about who will take the first snap in Week 1.
“From everything that I’ve understood, it is truly wide open,” Pelissero noted. “I don’t know, frankly, how friendly that quarterback room is going to be. It’s going to be a very competitive quarterback room.”
