Lake Wales Bat Tests Positive For First 2026 Rabies Case In Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Animal Control officials confirmed Wednesday that a bat found in Lake Wales has tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case of the virus in Polk County for 2026.

The incident began on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at a residence located in the 1700 block of Masterpiece Road. A homeowner discovered his dog standing over a bat in the yard. Although the owner was uncertain if any physical contact occurred between the two animals, the bat was impounded and transported to the State Laboratory in Tampa for evaluation.

Test results received by Animal Control on March 25 confirmed the bat was infected with the rabies virus. Following protocol, the dog has been placed under quarantine within the owner’s home to monitor for symptoms.

Sheriff Grady Judd issued a statement following the laboratory confirmation, emphasizing the risks associated with the virus.

“Rabies is a deadly disease, and we urge everyone to stay alert and avoid contact with stray or wild animals acting strangely,” Judd said. “If you see something suspicious, call us, don’t take chances with your health.”

Authorities advise residents not to approach any animal exhibiting unusual behavior. Individuals who believe they or their pets may have experienced an exposure are encouraged to contact the PCSO Animal Control Section at 863.577.1762.
