LAKELAND, Fla. – A 61-year-old local man died early Thursday morning after his car drove into a Lakeland retention pond.
Around 2:11 a.m. on June 11, officers from the Lakeland Police Department were called to a property at 2600 County Line Road. Investigators say a grey Toyota Prius was driving east on the grassy shoulder near the property entrance. For reasons that are still unclear, the driver slowly backed up into a concrete Lakeland Electric pole. The car then pulled forward, rolled down an embankment, and went straight into the water.
When police, Polk County Fire Rescue, and the Lakeland Fire Department arrived, the Prius was completely submerged. The police department’s dive team was called in to pull the car from the pond. Inside, they found the driver, identified as Paul Greenberg of Lakeland, deceased.
Detectives are still looking into exactly what led to the crash, but preliminary evidence shows no signs of foul play.
