SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A 47-year-old Lakeland man died late Thursday night after an SUV struck his motorized scooter at a highway intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 10:55 p.m. along southbound US-301 at the intersection of County Road 470 in Sumter County.
State troopers reported that the Lakeland man was stopped on his scooter in the southbound lane of US-301 at the intersection. At the same time, an 18-year-old Port Charlotte man driving a southbound Hyundai SUV approached the intersection, failed to stop, and collided with the back of the scooter.
The 47-year-old scooter operator sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of either driver, and the crash remains under investigation.
