A violent encounter in a Los Angeles apartment complex on Friday morning left a naked intruder dead and a 79-year-old landlord hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. local time on November 7 on the 4500 block of Tujunga Avenue. According to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Capt. Warner Castillo, the naked intruder wandered into the complex, prompting screams from two female tenants.

The military veteran landlord rushed to assist after hearing the commotion. Witnesses report the intruder then “body-slammed” the elderly man onto the concrete driveway, breaking both of the landlord’s legs.

In response, the landlord allegedly opened fire on the intruder, striking him in the head and chest. The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.

The landlord was transported to the hospital and is listed in serious condition. Authorities say there appears to be no prior connection between the intruder and the building’s tenants.

Security footage from a nearby complex showed the naked man walking and talking to himself just prior to the incident. A neighbor described the injured landlord as a “very nice man” and suggested the shooting would have been in self-defense.
