The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has ceased providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris, following intense criticism from a police advocacy group that argued the protection detail was diverting officers from crime-fighting duties.

The decision comes after a short-lived arrangement in which the LAPD, at the direction of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, stepped in to provide security for Harris after President Donald Trump canceled her extended Secret Service protection.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), which represents over 8,700 LAPD officers, publicly condemned the use of city resources for the former vice president’s security. In a pointed statement, the LAPPL board called the situation “nuts,” asserting that officers were being pulled from “protecting everyday Angelenos” to guard a “multi-millionaire with multiple homes” who could afford her own private security.

The LAPPL also directed its criticism toward California Governor Gavin Newsom, urging Mayor Bass to pressure him to financially support Harris’s security if he wished to “curry favor” with her and her donor base.

Former vice presidents are typically granted Secret Service protection for six months post-office.

However, former President Joe Biden had extended Harris’s protection to 18 months, an order that President Trump later rescinded in August.

The termination of the LAPD detail leaves Harris, who is currently preparing for a book tour to promote her memoir, without a consistent security presence. She may need to hire a private security team.
