LARGO, Fla. – Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a Largo woman for Aggravated Child Abuse.
Detectives were notified of a 3-month-old admitted to All Children’s Hospital for unexplained injuries. The child was brought in by 24-year-old Evelyn Lopez-Fleites after he began having seizures. Investigators learned the victim sustained several brain bleeds and multiple retinal hemorrhages consistent with abusive trauma. When detectives initially interviewed Lopez-Fleites, they noted inconsistencies in her possible explanation of the injuries.
On October 21, 2020 Lopez-Fleites was interviewed by detectives at the Sheriff’s Administrative Building located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Detectives say Lopez-Fleites admitted to detectives that she intentionally picked up the 3-month-old and shook him in a back and forth motion out of frustration caused by the baby’s crying.
Lopez-Fleites was charged with Aggravated Child Abuse and transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.
The victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The investigation continues.
