A Senate Republican on Wednesday filed a proposal that would prevent middle schools from starting earlier than 8 a.m. and high schools from starting earlier than 8:30 a.m.

Sen. Danny Burgess, R-Zephyrhills, filed the proposal (SB 1112) for consideration during the legislative session that will start March 7.

It comes amid a long-running debate about whether earlier start times contribute to sleep deprivation for teens.
