Lauren Boebert Under Scrutiny After Possibly Misusing Thousands In Campaign Donations

Andrew Trunsky

Federal election officials wrote a letter to Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert seeking answers on her seeming misuse of campaign funds totaling thousands of dollars.

The letter, from the Federal Election Commission to Boebert’s campaign treasurer, centers around four Venmo payments totaling $6,650.

Boebert’s FEC filings show two payments on May 3 totaling $3,325 and two one month later totaling the same. The filings describe the payments as a “personal expense of Lauren Boebert billed to the campaign account in error,” noting that the “expense has been reimbursed.”

In a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation, Ben Stout, Boebert’s communications director, said that Boebert thought she was using her personal account but mistakenly used a campaign one, and that the funds were reimbursed.

“The reimbursement occurred after second quarter ended, and will show up in [quarter 3],” Stout said, adding that the payments were for personal expenses but that he did not know what for.

The FEC letter notes that “if it is determined that the disbursement(s) constitutes the personal use of campaign funds, the Commission may consider taking further legal action.”

The letter is not the first time Boebert has received an FEC complaint. In February a watchdog group requested an investigation into over $20,000 worth of mileage reimbursements accrued during the 2020 campaign.
