Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel is facing a firestorm of criticism from liberals, left-wing media outlets, and social media users after he signed off on the firing of an agent trainee for displaying a Pride flag on his desk while on assignment in California in 2024.
CNN first reported the news on Friday, detailing that the trainee was informed by Patel that he displayed an “improper political message” in the workplace. The trainee, who was reportedly on probationary status, was told he had exercised “poor judgment” with an “inappropriate display.”
Patel’s decision immediately triggered widespread outrage, with many accusing the FBI Director of discrimination against LGBT individuals and spreading “fear” within the bureau.
MSNBC and CNN were quick to highlight the trainee’s record, noting he had received multiple service awards, including an Attorney General’s Award in 2022.
Prominent figures and outlets took to social media to voice their anger.
MSNBC senior investigative correspondent Carol Leonnig wrote on X, “This week, @FBI director Kash Patel fired an FBI agent trainee based on him once having a gay pride flag on his desk… Fear spreading in the field.”
The firing comes amid a broader push under Patel’s leadership to depoliticize the agency. The actions are aligned with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump’s administration in January 2024 to end Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in government agencies and revert to merit-based hiring.
Just months before the incident, the FBI, under Patel, had informed agents and directors in June that they were not to hold Pride Month celebrations during work hours in an effort to ensure agents do not engage in what is deemed “political practices.” The firing of the trainee appears to be a continuation of this policy to remove what the agency sees as political messaging from the workplace.
