Lightfoot Returns: Ex-Chicago Mayor Launches ‘Accountability’ Blitz Against ICE Agents

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot re-entered the public spotlight Thursday with a pointed mission: documenting and exposing alleged abuses by federal immigration authorities operating in the city.

Lightfoot announced the creation of the ICE Accountability Project, an independent initiative established to act as a centralized repository for complaints and evidence regarding federal agents. The project specifically targets conduct during “Operation Midway Blitz,” a federal enforcement surge that has drawn sharp criticism from local advocates.

The former mayor described the initiative as a tool for transparency, aimed at preserving evidence of alleged criminal behavior.

“We also intend to unmask those agents who have been alleged to have committed crimes or to have engaged in other unlawful conduct,” Lightfoot said Thursday.

While Lightfoot clarified that the project does not target the many agents who “live up to their oaths every day,” she drew a hard line regarding those she described as acting above the law. The initiative will focus on documenting serious allegations, including homicide, shootings, excessive force, and the indiscriminate deployment of chemical agents or projectiles like pepper balls against peaceful protesters.

“Since this terrible operation began last September, I, like many, have watched with horror, anger, and frustration to see the forces of our own government seem to relish terrorizing and traumatizing communities,” Lightfoot said, describing the atmosphere for families currently “living in fear.”

The launch of the watchdog group comes at a volatile moment in the national conversation regarding immigration enforcement.

During her announcement, Lightfoot invoked the name of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman who was fatally shot by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, underscoring the potential lethality of these interactions.
