A trip to the movies turned into a scene out of a police procedural on October 7th, when a 68-year-old man was arrested after allegedly attempting to get free refills at a local theater. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) is calling “cut” on what management says was a repeat performance of retail theft.

The alleged caper unfolded around 4:23 p.m. when a PCSO deputy arrived at the movie theater. According to theater management, the suspect, Wayne Aanenson, Jr. of Davenport, purchased a movie ticket earlier at 3:45 p.m. But the main attraction for Aanenson appears to have been the concession stand.

Just 13 minutes after buying his ticket, at 3:58 p.m., Aanenson allegedly approached the counter with an empty refillable popcorn bag and asked for a refill, valued at $10.50. He allegedly followed up at 4:14 p.m., asking for a refill on a fountain drink cup, a value of $9.50.

Here’s the twist: Management found that Aanenson had not made any popcorn or drink purchases that day. Theater policy dictates that refills are only valid on same-day purchases.

This wasn’t the suspect’s first time in the spotlight for this alleged trick. Management informed the deputy that Aanenson had been caught and warned multiple times before that his actions constituted theft.

Deputies quickly located Aanenson. When questioned about how he came to possess the cup and bag, he was unable to explain, stating he must have paid cash but had no receipts.

Wayne Aanenson, Jr. was subsequently arrested and transported to the Polk County Jail, charged with retail petit theft. He was also officially trespassed from the theater, ensuring his future visits will be strictly non-refillable.

The value of the alleged stolen refills—a mere $20—lands Aanenson in hot water, proving that even a small-scale, buttery crime can lead to a sticky legal situation.
