Two brothers in Goodyear, Arizona, are facing charges including second-degree murder and aggravated assault following the death of their 41-year-old father, Antwan Jones Sr., whom they allegedly beat and strangled during a morning confrontation at their home last week.

Dayvon Jones, 22, and Antwan Jones Jr., 23, were taken into custody by the Goodyear Police Department in connection with the fatal incident. Both siblings are charged with one count of aggravated assault, while Dayvon Jones faces an additional count of second-degree murder, court records confirm.

Police responded to a call of “unknown trouble” around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday at a residence near Estrella Parkway and Lower Buckeye Parkway. Upon arrival, first responders found Antwan Jones Sr. inside the home, not breathing.

Officers and then emergency medical personnel performed CPR before transporting the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities initially detained the two sons, who were believed to be involved in an altercation that led to their father’s death.

Brothers Claim Self-Defense Amid History of Abuse

Details emerging from court documents reveal the brothers’ account of the events, which they claim were in self-defense.

According to their statements to detectives, the siblings had argued with their father the previous evening. The confrontation escalated the following morning when Antwan Jones Sr. allegedly entered the bedroom the brothers share, where they were playing video games, and demanded they “stand up and fight or get out of his house.”

The brothers told police their father often had “outbursts” and frequently threatened them with physical violence, suggesting they had been “living in fear” of him.

The deadly fight began, they claim, when their father allegedly punched Antwan Jones Jr. in the face, causing a bloody nose. Dayvon Jones reportedly responded by putting his father in a chokehold for about 15 seconds. During this time, Antwan Jones Jr. admitted to punching his father several times, stating he was in shock after being struck.

The brothers ceased the attack only after their father made a “grunting noise” and went limp. Dayvon Jones immediately fled the house, and Antwan Jones Jr. followed, both reportedly out of fear their father would regain consciousness and “hurt or kill” them. The brothers later called 911 a second time and drove themselves to the police station.

In a corroboration of a history of abuse, the defendants’ mother and younger siblings told police that Antwan Jones Sr. had assaulted and strangled Antwan Jones Jr. several years prior.

The brothers are currently being held in the Maricopa County Jail, each on a $500,000 bond. The investigation remains ongoing.
