By: Deborah Childress

The big-picture COVID-19 case trend for Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties indicates a considerable uptick in residents and non-residents testing positive for the virus from June 8to June 16, 2020, compared to the month of May and the first week of June.

In Hillsborough County, there are 4,546 residents and 64 non-residents who have tested positive, with a total of 557 hospitalizations and 105 total deaths.  Thus far, the county has experienced a death rate of 2.28% among all positive cases.  Females have contracted the virus more than men with 2,417 cases compared to 2,126, respectively.

In Pasco County, there are 616 residents and 11 non-residents who have tested positive, with a total of 101 hospitalizations and 16 deaths.  Thus far, the county has experienced a death rate of 2.5% among all positive cases.  Females have contracted the virus more than men with 330 cases compared to 285 cases, respectively.

In Polk County, there are 1,690 residents and 12 non-residents who have tested positive, with a total of 393 hospitalizations and 76 deaths.  The death rate is 4.5% among all positive cases.  986 females have contracted the virus compared to 704 males.

Statewide, 2.4% – or 627 – of those tested were positive for the virus, with 25,368 testing negative.  Overall, the state’s 25 to 34-year-old age group tops all other age groups for testing positive, with the 35 to 64-year-old age group trailing close behind.  Deaths have diminished during the significant uptick in cases, showing a decrease as of June 15.

Increased testing accounts for some of the county-by-county increases in positive test results.
