Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy Blasts Dems’ ‘Loon Wing’ Driving Shutdown Like Angry ‘Gary Busey’

Senator John Kennedy Takes Center Stage, Claiming Fear of Far-Left Radicals is Forcing Schumer’s Hand and Insisting GOP Won’t Cave to ‘Political Decision’

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) took to the Senate floor on Tuesday to deliver a fiery speech, casting the impending government shutdown as a political maneuver driven by the “Loon Wing” of the Democratic Party and fear among their Senate colleagues.

Kennedy’s remarks elevate the charge that internal party politics—rather than policy—are fueling the crisis, making this the main point of the Republican argument.

“The Loon Wing, the socialist Wing, the angry ‘Gary Busey’ wing of the democratic party, is an ascendancy,” Kennedy stated live from the floor. He claimed this radical faction has “enormous amount of power” and that many Democratic senators are “scared of” them, leading them to refuse compromise.

“That’s why I say this is a political decision, and that’s why we’re going to shut government down,” Kennedy asserted, directly challenging Democrats on their demands for a $1.5 trillion stopgap bill. “We’re not gonna agree to their demands… They know we’re not going to agree to it.”

He challenged Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY): “If you pray for rain, you better be prepared to deal with the mud… How is my friend Chuck Schumer going to get government back open?”

Kennedy’s comments echoed earlier accusations from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Vice President Vance, who have both squarely blamed Democrats for the failure to reach a funding deal.

Appearing on Fox News, Speaker Johnson claimed Schumer was guarding his “own political cover” against “young socialists” like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Johnson accused Democrats of pushing “radical” demands, including restoring benefits for illegal immigrants and funding “left-leaning media outlets” like NPR and PBS.

Vice President Vance, following a contentious White House meeting, similarly condemned the Democrats’ strategy, calling it “putting a gun to the American people’s head.”

“You don’t use your policy disagreements as leverage to not pay our troops,” Vance told reporters, laying the blame on Democrats if funding lapses before the midnight Tuesday deadline. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) similarly accused Democrats of “hostage taking.”

While strongly laying blame, Senator Kennedy offered assurances to the public, particularly the elderly, about essential services during a shutdown.

“It scares the living daylights out of the American people, especially our elderly… it just breaks my heart,” Kennedy said. He guaranteed that the Trump Administration would ensure essential workers remain on the job to continue key payments:

  • Social Security checks will continue.
  • Medicare and Medicaid benefits will continue.
  • Veterans disability payments will continue.
  • SNAP (food stamps) and WIC program payments will continue.
  • Mail service will continue.
  • VA medical centers will remain open.

He noted, however, that the public would notice the impact, as roughly 750,000 federal employees would be furloughed, leading to the closure of national parks and museums.

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders insisted their demands were not radical but critical. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned President Trump that allowing enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to expire could cause health insurance premiums to rise by as much as $400 a month for some families.

He also cautioned that dozens of small and rural hospitals could close due to Medicaid cuts in the House-passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
