Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy Douses Greenland Invasion Panic With Classic Rant

In a capital already on edge following the U.S. military’s operation in Venezuela, Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) stepped up to the microphones Wednesday to crush rumors of an impending American invasion of Greenland with his trademark folksy bluntness.

Amid swirling speculation that the Trump administration might turn its sights—and its military—toward the Arctic island nation, Kennedy offered a colorful reality check. His assessment of a potential invasion of a NATO ally?

“Weapons-grade stupid.”

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, the Louisiana Republican dismissed the idea that President Donald Trump or Secretary of State Marco Rubio would actually authorize such a move.

“You don’t have to be Einstein’s cousin to figure out that at this juncture two things are true,” Kennedy deadpanned. “Number one: To invade Greenland would be weapons-grade stupid. And Donald Trump is not weapons-grade stupid. Neither is Marco Rubio.”

The comments come as the White House faces global scrutiny over its “Don-roe Doctrine” expansionism. But while Kennedy was quick to shut down the Greenland talk, he didn’t miss the chance to lecture the press corps on the grim reality unfolding in South America.

Pivoting immediately to the situation in Caracas, Kennedy dropped the humor for a lesson in hard power. He argued that despite the recent capture of Venezuelan leaders, the country’s fate rests entirely in the hands of its armed forces—a point he suggested should be obvious to anyone paying attention.

“Unless you were playing Frisbee in the quad during History 101, you know that the future of Venezuela, one way or the other, is going to be determined by the military,” Kennedy said.

He went on to cite a brutal maxim to drive the point home.

“In this respect, Mao was right: Power grows from the barrel of a gun,” Kennedy said, referencing the Chinese communist leader. “And the military here is key. And that’s all there is to it.”

With that, he walked off, leaving the press to parse the difference between a geopolitical distraction in the Arctic and the very real regime change happening in the Caribbean.
