Louisiana Senator John Kennedy offered a characteristically blunt assessment of the Upper Chamber, saying on the “Jason in The House” podcast Monday, “There’s never a boring day in the U.S. Senate.”
Kennedy discussed his career, his plain-spoken political style, and the often combative reality of life in Washington, D.C., contrasting it with the Senate’s image as the “most deliberative body on the face of the planet.”
Kennedy suggested that anyone entering the Senate quickly becomes accustomed to the volatile atmosphere, quipping that prospective members “don’t have to be crazy to serve in the US Senate, they will they will happily train you.” He attributed the high-tension environment to the nature of the institution itself:
Political Swings: He noted the constant shift in alliances, where “your friend today on a bill might be your enemy tomorrow and vice versa.”
Big Egos: He described the Senate as a group of one hundred people “all of whom have big egos.”
Kennedy, a vocal critic of what he calls the lack of “common sense” in Washington, lamented the political gamesmanship he observes, referring to certain colleagues as “high IQ stupid people.”
He specifically cited the recent government shutdown, calling it “bone deep down to the mayor of stupid” and an “unserious offer” meant only to shore up New York Senator Chuck Schumer’s own political standing with the party’s “loon wing.”
For Kennedy, the constant drama and intensity of the Senate are preferable to a predictable career in law, which he practiced for years. When asked about his transition to politics, he noted that while he earned a good living practicing law, “it gets a little boring sometimes.”
