Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) delivered a sharp attack on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, declaring that “History teaches us socialism is for morons” during a weekend appearance on Fox News “Saturday in America.”
The Louisiana Senator made the comment while being interviewed about the ongoing political debate over socialism and the growing influence of figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez within the Democratic ranks.
“Well, those who have read history, okay, they understand that uh, socialism is for morons,” Senator Kennedy stated.
Kennedy went on to characterize the progressive elements of the party as the “loon wing, the Bolshevik wing, the socialist wing,” asserting that this group is now “obviously in control.” He blamed this faction for driving the recent government shutdown, stating that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer “knew better” but was compelled to act by the socialist wing.
The Senator singled out the newly elected mayor of Seattle as an example of what he called a “typical moonbat” and a “self-avowed socialist,” saying, “she’s proud of things that she should be ashamed of.”
In addition to his comments on ideology, the interview touched on Senator Kennedy’s legislative efforts to impose what he called “shared sacrifice” during government shutdowns. He referenced a bill he had sponsored to put the pay of members of the Senate and House in escrow, ensuring that if federal workers, such as TSA agents, are not being paid, lawmakers also do not receive their salary.
“I just believe in shared sacrifice,” Kennedy said, emphasizing that he believes in “one rule for everybody.” He noted that his effort to add this measure to the resolution ending the shutdown was blocked by Senate Republican leadership, though the measure was agreed to be sent to a committee for future consideration.
