Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty to federal stalking charges tied to the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to sources familiar with the matter.
A pretrial conference was set for 11 a.m. ET in Manhattan federal court.
The December 2024 shooting of Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel drew national attention to the insurance industry and public discontent surrounding health insurance claims. Thompson led the largest health insurer in the United States.
Sources familiar with the discussions noted that negotiations over a potential plea agreement were ongoing, emphasizing that no deal is finalized until Mangione officially accepts it in court. Mangione retains the option to alter his decision during the proceedings.
Mangione faces two federal charges: interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death.
It has not been confirmed whether any agreement would include guilty pleas to one or both counts. Each charge carries a potential maximum penalty of life in prison.
