Nicolás Maduro is currently locked inside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, facing federal drug and weapons charges following a dramatic capture operation in Caracas on Saturday.

But the immediate aftermath of the arrest has been defined by President Donald Trump’s declaration that the United States intends to “seize” the nation’s vast oil reserves and “run” the country for the foreseeable future.

Speaking after the operation—which involved U.S. strikes and the reported coordination of elite Delta Force units—President Trump asserted that the U.S. will manage Venezuelan affairs until a “judicious transition” can be arranged.

‘Judicious Transition’ and Oil Control

The confirmation that Maduro is behind bars at the infamous MDC Brooklyn facility has effectively decapitated the Venezuelan socialist regime.

However, Trump’s comments regarding the country’s natural resources have drawn the most intense scrutiny. By explicitly stating the U.S. will seize Venezuela’s massive oil reserves, the administration has signaled that the operation is about stabilizing the energy market as much as it is about law enforcement.

MAGA World Reacts to the New Reality

The President’s assertion that America is now “running” Venezuela has complicated the celebration among his base. While the “MAGA” movement was largely united in praise of the military success, the shift toward nation-building has opened fissures.

Commentators like Mike Cernovich initially celebrated the raid as a show of “real leadership” and military capability, and Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) praised the removal of a “convicted narco terrorist.” However, the specific language about governing Venezuela sparked skepticism from the isolationist wing of the party.

It was Trump’s “running Venezuela” comment that triggered a sarcastic response from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). “We are ‘running’ Venezuela now,” she posted with a facepalm emoji, highlighting the tension between the “America First” doctrine and foreign entanglements.

Similarly, former Green Beret and Republican State Del. Nick Freitas (VA) noted that while he supported a strike to capture a criminal, the expansion of the mission crossed a line. “Now that I hear we will be ‘running Venezuela,’ I have some concerns,” Freitas wrote. “I’ve lived at the business end of this kind of foreign policy and it didn’t work out well.”

Political Fallout

Despite the internal debate, Trump allies were quick to use the operation as a bludgeon against domestic opponents.

Rep. Lance Gooden predicted that Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would focus on “interventionism” rather than Maduro’s crimes. At the same time, radio host Scott Jennings joked that Maduro was “the only illegal alien Dems don’t want to bring to the US.”

Meanwhile, commentators like Brandon Tatum viewed the timing as a geopolitical power play, noting that the capture occurred while a Chinese delegation was still in Venezuela—a “savage” message to Beijing that the U.S. is now firmly in control of the situation on the ground.
