PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Construction crews are changing the traffic pattern again on I-275 south, and drivers need to stay alert to avoid surprises.

Starting this coming week, the lanes on southbound I-275 are shifting over.

For drivers between Roosevelt Boulevard (Exit 30) and 38th Avenue N (Exit 25), the regular traffic lanes are moving toward the middle of the highway—the median.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. If you drove through the area during the week of January 18th, you might have noticed lanes shifting near 54th Avenue N. Now, crews are extending that new alignment further south.

Nightly Lane Closures

To get the road ready, workers will need to close lanes at night. If you are driving late, you should plan for possible delays.

  • When: Sunday night, Jan. 25 through Thursday night, Jan. 29.
  • Time: 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • Where: From Roosevelt Boulevard/Gateway Expressway down to 38th Avenue N.

These closures depend on the weather, so heavy rain could push the schedule back.

Watch the Merge

The biggest thing to watch out for is the new merge point.

There is now a new spot where drivers coming from the Southbound Express Lane merge into the regular left lane. This happens right before you get to Gandy Boulevard. Because the general lanes are shifting, this merge location has moved, too.

These changes are part of the ongoing project to widen I-275. The new traffic pattern will stay in place for the next few phases of construction, so take your time and give other drivers plenty of space while everyone gets used to the new road.
