A town hall meeting in Minneapolis took a sudden and scary turn on Tuesday. U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar was speaking to a room full of people when a man in a black jacket interrupted the event. He managed to spray an unknown substance on the Congresswoman before people nearby jumped into action.
The scene turned chaotic very quickly. The man was tackled to the floor, and the audience actually cheered as he was pinned down. Witnesses say his arms were tied behind his back to keep him from moving. In a video taken during the incident, you can clearly hear the confusion and fear in the room. One person in the crowd shouted, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.”
WATCH:
Just moments before the disruption, the Congresswoman had been talking about some serious changes she wants to see in the government.
She called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. She also argued that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, should be shut down completely. “ICE cannot be reformed,” she told the crowd.
It is not yet clear exactly what the man sprayed or why he did it. As of Tuesday evening, the Minneapolis police had not responded to emails or calls asking for more details about the incident or confirming if the man was officially arrested.
