Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin extended a surprising invitation to one of the GOP’s most conservative members: Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Speaking at a “Blue Bash Brunch” fundraiser hosted by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, Raskin, the top Democrat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, pitched his party as a “huge, vast tent,” welcoming the arch-conservative lawmaker to “jump ship.”
A ‘Vast Tent’ for the Arch-Conservative?
“I say that this is the party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over,” Raskin declared, adding, “We got room for anybody who wants to stand up for the Constitution and for the Bill of Rights today.”
The extraordinary invitation comes hot on the heels of a very public rift between Greene and President Donald Trump. Trump, once her steadfast ally, blasted Greene in recent Truth Social posts, calling her “wacky,” a “ranting Lunatic,” and saying she had “gone Far Left.” He even announced he would not support her 2026 reelection bid, opening the door for a primary challenge.

The New ‘Conservatives’
Raskin’s pitch wasn’t just about party size; it was about defining ideology. He suggested Democrats, not Republicans, are the true “conservatives.”
Recounting a conversation with former Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, Raskin said he embraced the term “liberal” for its root in ‘liberty’ and “progressive” for ‘progress.’
But his final claim was the most forceful: “My favorite thing to call myself today is a conservative,” he boomed, listing off key legislation and institutions he wants to protect.
- Protecting: The land, air, water, and climate system.
- Conserving: The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act.
- Defending: The Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Clean Air and Water Acts.
“Everything that party of authoritarians wants to destroy is everything we’re going to conserve and defend in America,” Raskin asserted, pivoting the Democratic Party’s image from progressive to protective.
A Shifting Political Landscape
While Greene remains defiant—telling CNN she still supports Trump despite his attacks—the offer from a prominent Democrat highlights the turbulence in her political standing. Booted from the conservative House Freedom Caucus in 2023 and now facing the loss of her most powerful endorsement, Greene’s next move is the focus of Washington speculation.
Raskin’s bold move—inviting an ideological firebrand like Greene—serves as a clear challenge to the fractured Republican party, positioning Democrats as the ultimate destination for “patriots” across the political spectrum who feel abandoned by what he termed the “party of authoritarians.”
