Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren suggested Friday that President Donald Trump’s recent overtures to New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani are a strategic attempt to co-opt the incoming mayor’s momentum on economic issues.

Speaking on CNN’s “The Lead,” Warren characterized the Oval Office meeting between the two men earlier that day as a move by the President to address his own vulnerabilities regarding the cost of living.

“He [Trump] has a problem. And Zohran Mamdani is the person who is now associated with fixing that problem,” Warren told host Jake Tapper. “So is it any surprise that Donald Trump wants to stand next to Zohran Mamdani and say, ‘Oh, yeah, we think about things the same way, particularly when it comes to affordability?’”

The Friday meeting was described as friendly, a distinct shift from the adversarial relationship displayed during the campaign season. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, ran on a platform explicitly branded “The Five Boroughs Against Trump.”

Conversely, Trump had previously labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened to arrest him if the mayor-elect followed through on promises to obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

Despite the history of animosity, Warren argued that Trump is looking to attach himself to Mamdani’s rising political profile.

“He’s just trying to take a little of the shine that Zohran Mamdani has and see if he can, you know, rub a little on Donald Trump,” Warren said.
