Mattress-Mashing Fugitive Found: K-9 Sniffs Out Wanted Man In Condemned Winter Haven Home

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A 27-year-old man with a long list of active felony warrants is back behind bars after a failed attempt to outrun Polk County deputies on Monday morning.

The search for Shawn Giles began around 11:30 a.m. on April 13, when deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office tracked him to a residence on Avenue V NW in Winter Haven. Upon seeing the officers arrive, Giles fled on foot, prompting a local search.

The pursuit eventually led deputies to a condemned house near the intersection of 34th Street NW and Avenue W NW.

Inside the dilapidated structure, K-9 Deputy Ludlow and her partner, K-9 Brix, began a room-by-room sweep. The search ended when Brix alerted his handler to a mattress inside the home.

Giles was discovered hiding underneath it and was taken into custody, though deputies noted he was “reluctantly” apprehended.

Giles was transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center to face a mountain of existing charges.

His original warrants included failure to appear for felony battery, obstruction, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, introduction of contraband into a detention facility, and violation of pretrial release.

Following the Monday morning chase, Giles now faces additional charges of two counts of first-degree misdemeanor resisting and violation of probation. He remains in the custody of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
