A Michigan man shot and killed his wife and six children before setting their home on fire and taking his own life, local authorities reported Monday following the completion of autopsies.
Emergency crews discovered the eight family members dead in separate bedrooms Friday after responding to a home fire in Grand Haven Township, located west of Grand Rapids near Lake Michigan.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office identified the parents as 47-year-old Kristopher Karolkiewicz and 39-year-old Amanda Karolkiewicz. Authorities ruled the deaths of Amanda Karolkiewicz and the six children as homicides, while Kristopher Karolkiewicz’s death was ruled a suicide. All eight individuals died from gunshot wounds.
The deceased children ranged in age from 5 to 15, according to the sheriff’s office. They included four boys, ages 5, 11, 12, and 15, alongside two 11-year-old girls. Officials stated four of the children were biological and two were adopted. Their names are not being released.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened,” Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jake Sparks said during a press briefing Monday. “But we’ll do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims.”
Fire personnel first received reports of the smell of smoke in the area Friday morning, though initial responders were unable to pinpoint a location. Hours later, crews were called back to the neighborhood for reports of white smoke emerging from the Karolkiewicz home. Upon entering the structure to suppress the flames, firefighters located the victims.
Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set in multiple areas of the residence, with heavy damage reported in the basement. The exact cause and origin remain under investigation. Several family pets, including dogs and a cat, also died in the blaze.
“No suspects remain outstanding and the investigation shows that this was a murder-suicide, with a fire being started after the murders,” Sparks said in a written press release.
Sparks indicated the shootings may have taken place as early as Thursday night. The weapon used was a handgun, which authorities believe was registered.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools released a statement Saturday acknowledging the tragedy.
“Our hearts are with all those impacted, and we know many throughout our community may be grieving and struggling to process this news,” the superintendent’s office stated, while providing crisis and suicide support resources to residents and students.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office stated the investigation into the sequence of events remains active.
“We’re trying to get answers for the family. We’re trying to get answers for the community. We’re trying to get answers for our own responders,” Sparks said.
