Michigan Mom Charged After Husband Found In Basement: “Make Sure He Was Out Of His Misery”

A 31-year-old Michigan woman is behind bars this week after police say she shot her husband multiple times inside their Battle Creek home, later telling investigators she opened fire to “make sure he was out of his misery.”

Andrea Graham was taken into custody Monday afternoon and now faces charges of open murder and a felony firearm offense in the death of her husband, Alan Graham.

The incident unfolded around 4:30 p.m. in the 100 block of South Ridgeway Drive, roughly 120 miles west of Detroit. According to the Battle Creek Police Department, officers arriving at the scene were met by Andrea Graham outside the house.

She directed them inside to a basement hallway, where first responders discovered Alan Graham suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Despite attempts at lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court documents obtained by the Battle Creek Enquirer provide a grim look at the evidence recovered from the residence. Investigators found a 9 mm pistol and several shell casings scattered throughout different rooms, suggesting the confrontation moved across the home.

On the victim’s body, police reportedly found shattered glass from a broken picture frame.

While in custody, Graham allegedly gave a blunt description of the shooting to responding officers.

“I shot him a couple of times to make sure he was out of his misery because I didn’t want him to suffer slowly,” she reportedly said, according to statements cited in a report from WOOD-TV.

Graham has claimed she acted in self-defense, telling authorities that her husband was strangling her at the time she fired the weapon.

However, investigators noted in court filings that they did not see physical injuries on her, consistent with being strangled, and they stated that the physical evidence at the scene did not align with her version of events.

During her initial appearance in Calhoun County Court, Graham entered a plea of not guilty. Her defense attorney noted that she is a stay-at-home mother of two with no prior felony record.

She is currently being held without bond and is slated to return to court for a probable cause conference on April 22.
