A Michigan mother has admitted to killing her 3-year-old son, Matthew Maison, who authorities say was “systematically abused” for years by her and her former boyfriend before ultimately being beaten to death in 2018.

Amanda Mae Maison, 33, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of second-degree murder in the death of her son. The plea is part of a deal with prosecutors that requires her to provide “truthful testimony” against her then-boyfriend, Maurice Houle, who faces a first-degree murder charge in an upcoming trial.

According to a news release from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, Maison admitted to concealing Matthew’s injuries from Child Protective Services and law enforcement. She also confessed to participating in the abuse, including once pushing Matthew’s head into a wall during a “military time out.”

Prosecutors previously asserted that Matthew suffered “years of abuse” and was subjected to punishments like being made to kneel where “his head would be banged off the drywall.” They also alleged the couple had a “plan” to “kill Matthew to make room for a child the two of them could have together.”

Maison was remanded to the St. Claire County Jail until her formal sentencing. The second-degree murder charge carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison.

“Thank you to the many law enforcement officers, family members, and others for bringing us to this day. Matthew is finally beginning to get the justice he deserves. The dedication to this case is unmatched. Although this is not the end, I am confident justice will be served,” says Sheriff Mat King.
