A doctor faces multiple felony counts after an investigation revealed multiple victims, including a 12-year-old.
Thomas Shannon, a 43-year-old orthodontist formerly practicing in Grandville, Michigan, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, on Wednesday for charges of child exploitation.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey announced the arrest, detailing a case built on evidence that emerged from an initial tip and was solidified by an unusual turn of events involving a private forensic examination.
The criminal complaint against Shannon stems from a report by a therapist who alleged that a 16-year-old minor had been sexually exploited on the social media platform Snapchat. Investigators, using records from both Snapchat and CashApp, were able to identify Shannon as the perpetrator.

In a surprising twist, Shannon hired a private forensic examiner to review his phone, reportedly to prove his innocence and that he didn’t possess child pornography.
Instead, the examiner discovered child pornography on the device and promptly turned the evidence over to law enforcement. A review of the phone and other digital records by investigators uncovered additional minor victims, one of whom was as young as 12 years old.
Another victim, a minor, independently came forward, stating she had met Shannon online and he had directed her to engage in sexually explicit video chats with him.

- Receipt of Child Pornography, with a mandatory minimum of 5 years and up to 20 years in prison.

- Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, which carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison.
- Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, with a mandatory minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison.
The case is the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the Fuquay Varina Police Department in North Carolina, and the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland. The combined efforts of these law enforcement bodies were crucial in bringing Shannon to justice.
