A Michigan mother and father are facing murder and child abuse charges months after their 7-year-old son, who weighed 255 pounds, passed away.
Casper O’Brien died on November 4, 2025, after emergency responders arrived at his family’s Flint Township home. Paramedics had responded to a 911 call reporting that the child was having a hard time breathing. According to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office, the boy was in severe distress and unable to move when help arrived.
An autopsy report from the Genesee County Medical Examiner determined that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy. This type of heart disease causes the heart chambers to enlarge and weaken, making it difficult to pump blood effectively. Medical records show the condition is frequently linked to severe obesity, which is marked by a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
At the time of his death, Casper stood 4 feet, 2 inches tall and carried a BMI of 71.7. According to growth charts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an average BMI for a boy his age is roughly 16.
On June 23, court filings revealed that the boy’s parents, Damien and Jessica O’Brien, were charged with second-degree murder and three counts of second-degree child abuse. If they are convicted, both parents could face up to life in prison. They are currently being held at the Genesee County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court on July 2.
One of the child abuse charges stems from the treatment of Casper’s 5-year-old sister. Court documents state that when police and medical personnel arrived at the home last year, they found the young girl dirty, with severely knotted hair, and “morbidly overweight.”
Law enforcement and Children’s Protective Services descriptions included in the medical examiner’s report painted a picture of the family’s living environment. The home was described as “unkempt” with “piles of trash throughout most of the residence.” The report also noted that Casper did not like water, making bathing difficult, and that his diet consisted almost entirely of potato chips and french fries.
Investigative records show that Casper was not enrolled in school. His last visit to a primary care doctor occurred in 2024. At that time, he weighed just over 104 pounds and was diagnosed with an acute cough, throat congestion, and metabolic disease.
While the doctor referred the family to a pediatric endocrinologist during that visit, the medical examiner’s report noted the boy never saw the specialist.
Attorneys representing the parents stated that it is “premature” and “too early” to comment directly on the specific allegations, noting they have not yet received the evidence and discovery files from the prosecution.
