Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin publicly called for the funding of the Department of Homeland Security on Friday, a move that comes immediately after she joined a party-line vote to keep the agency’s operations stalled just yesterday.
During a televised appearance Friday, Slotkin stated, “Certainly we need to fund the Department of Homeland Security.”
The Senator’s shift in rhetoric follows a series of high-profile security threats and attacks, including a car bomb attack on a synagogue within her home state of Michigan. RELATED: Training Credited For Saving Lives After Explosives-Laden Truck Rams Michigan Synagogue
This incident was one of four attacks on American soil reported over the last 14 days. Despite the local violence, Slotkin voted yesterday to maintain a filibuster that effectively blocked the passage of DHS funding.
Records show that the Senate vote concluded after the Michigan synagogue attack had already taken place. Slotkin acknowledged the attack on social media prior to the roll call, indicating awareness of the situation before casting her vote to sustain the shutdown.
Slotkin was joined by 46 of her 47 Democratic colleagues in the Senate, who also voted to maintain the filibuster.
This collective action has kept the Department of Homeland Security without an active budget during a window of heightened domestic activity.
While the Senator now emphasizes the need to support the agency, the official roll call from the previous day remains the most recent legislative action on the matter.
