A 31-year-old Michigan woman faces up to five years in prison after the severely decomposed body of her newborn son was discovered inside a dumpster earlier this month.
Daysiana Powell was arrested on July 10 and arraigned two days later on a charge of concealing the death of an individual.
According to police reports, officers discovered the infant’s body on July 8. The newborn was wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a tote bag before being left in the dumpster. Following an initial investigation, authorities identified Powell as the child’s mother. Investigators allege that Powell failed to contact emergency services or law enforcement at any point surrounding the infant’s death.
Family members expressed shock and grief following the discovery and Powell’s subsequent arrest. In an interview with WXYZ, relatives stated that they remained entirely unaware of the situation until the police intervention, noting that they would have stepped in to assist if they had known.
“We would have helped her had she asked,” family members told reporters.
Records show Powell was released from custody after posting a $50,000 personal bond. She is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference on July 21, followed by a preliminary examination hearing on July 28 to determine if there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
