Florida motorists are grappling with a sudden surge at the gas pump, with prices jumping 16 cents in the past week, bringing the state average for a gallon of gasoline to $3.11.
This increase comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following recent U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, prompting a fiery response from President Donald Trump regarding global oil prices.
The volatility at the pump is a direct consequence of the renewed conflict between Iran and Israel, which has sent ripples through international oil markets.

Last week saw an even more dramatic 20-cent hike, pushing prices to $3.15 per gallon by Thursday, a level not seen since early May. While a slight retreat over the weekend brought the average down to $3.11, the underlying geopolitical instability continues to fuel anxieties.
A significant concern for global oil markets is Iran’s renewed threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical commercial shipping channel through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply flows.
While the Iranian Parliament has reportedly voted in favor of this drastic measure, a final decision from the country’s Supreme National Security Council remains pending. Such a closure would severely disrupt global oil supplies and could send prices soaring to unprecedented levels, with some analysts forecasting Brent crude could reach $130 per barrel in such a scenario.

In response to the rising oil prices and the perceived threat to global economic stability, President Donald Trump issued a stern warning via his Truth Social platform on Monday morning.
“EVERYONE, KEEP OIL PRICES DOWN. I’M WATCHING! YOU’RE PLAYING RIGHT INTO THE HANDS OF THE ENEMY. DON’T DO IT!” he posted in all caps. He followed this with a direct message to the Department of Energy: “DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! And I mean NOW!!!”
The renewed conflict between Iran and Israel had already pushed crude oil prices to their highest levels since January. On Friday, crude closed at $74.93 per barrel, a notable increase of roughly $2 from the previous week. Overnight trading saw oil prices fluctuate between $74 and $77 per barrel, a stark contrast to the May average of $60 per barrel.

Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, cautioned that “Drivers in the U.S. could see higher prices at the pump if tensions persist or if oil flows are disrupted.” He added, “So far, the impact has been measured, but market watchers are keeping a close eye on how things unfold in the coming days.”
The situation remains fluid, and Floridians should be prepared for continued fluctuations in gas prices as global events continue to unfold.
