HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A late-night drive on Interstate 75 took a violent turn Thursday when a local man slammed into a parked truck inside a highway work zone.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred around 10:50 PM near Milepost 263, a stretch of the interstate currently undergoing roadwork.
According to investigators, a 44-year-old man from Brandon was behind the wheel of a Mercedes GLC300, heading northbound.
For reasons still being looked into, the driver entered a section of the highway that had been closed off for construction. Once inside the closure, the Mercedes struck a parked Ford F350.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the collision and transported the man, who suffered serious injuries, to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, because the Ford truck was empty, no workers or other bystanders were hurt in the crash.
As of Friday morning, officials have not released the driver’s current condition or indicated if any charges are pending.
