AUBURNDALE, FL – Early Sunday morning, an investigation by Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies turned into a high-speed traffic stop, resulting in the arrest of two Auburndale drivers allegedly racing on a local highway.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 1:30 a.m. PCSO deputies were in the area of Berkley Road and Old Dixie Highway when they observed two pickup trucks engaged in a race down the roadway. Authorities report that both vehicles were traveling at 70 mph in a posted 40 mph zone.
Deputies initiated traffic stops on both vehicles: a red 2001 Toyota Tacoma and a brown 2014 Ford F-150.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was identified as 19-year-old Jabez Miles Culberson of Auburndale. The Ford F150 was being driven by a 17-year-old male, also from Auburndale, whose name is being withheld due to his age.
Both drivers were subsequently arrested and charged with:
- Racing (M1)
- Possession of Marijuana (M1)
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (M1)
Culberson was transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center, while the juvenile driver was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that racing on public roads is a dangerous and illegal activity that puts the lives of all motorists and passengers at risk.
