A 21-year-old Minnesota man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his neighbor over a $100 debt.
Avery Cadwell pleaded guilty on October 24 in connection with the death of 28-year-old Codi Brown. According to court records, the incident occurred on June 15 on Porcupine Road in Cass Lake. Cadwell, who reportedly told a witness he was “going to get” Brown over the money he believed he was owed, chased Brown as he rode his ATV and delivered a single fatal stab wound to the chest.
Brown continued for a short distance before collapsing and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Witnesses identified Cadwell, who was apprehended by Beltrami Sheriff’s Office deputies after he emerged from the woods where he had fled.
While Cadwell initially faced a potential 40-year sentence, the judge handed down a 25-year term following his guilty plea. Court documents indicate Cadwell expressed regret about bringing the knife and stated he had not intended to kill Brown, only to hurt him.
