House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) appeared on “Fox News Sunday” to assert that President Donald Trump is actively repairing an economy broken by the previous administration’s spending, which he labeled the “original sin” of double-digit inflation.
Emmer argued that the current administration inherited a broken system, pinning the economic woes directly on the Democrats’ key legislation. He claimed that the “American Rescue Plan,” which he said was “wrongly named,” drove historic inflation by injecting two trillion dollars into the economy.
“Economists call it the original sin—it drove double-digit inflation that we hadn’t seen in 40 years,” Emmer stated.
Emmer credited Donald Trump with fixing the resultant economic issues, listing specific areas of improvement for consumers.
“Donald Trump inherited that broken economy and he has been fixing it,” Emmer said, noting that “energy prices are down, grocery prices are down,” and gas prices are at their “lowest point in 5 years.”
Emmer also criticized Democrats for what he views as a continued commitment to high spending, citing their proposed continuing resolution that involved spending $1.5 trillion. He referred to this as “the same failed economic policy that put Americans in the ditch.”
When challenged with reporting from The Wall Street Journal suggesting voters focused on the economy are breaking for Democrats, Emmer dismissed the analysis as “completely false.” He pointed to recent Republican successes in various races—including the re-election of a Republican county executive in Nassau County, New York, and the election of a Republican mayor in Binghamton, New York—as evidence that the economic message is, in fact, resonating with voters.
Emmer expressed confidence that as the economy continues to improve, voters will reward Republicans in the midterms.
“Donald Trump and the Republicans… that is what voters are going to understand and know and that’s why we’re going to hold our majorities in the House and the Senate,” he concluded.
