Minnesota vs. The Feds: Why One CNN Commentator Says The State Stands Alone

A major debate continues to unfold over immigration enforcement, and according to one CNN political commentator, Minnesota has become a unique battleground.

Scott Jennings, a senior political commentator for the network, appeared on “The Arena with Kasie Hunt” to discuss why federal immigration operations seem to be running smoothly in most of the country but are causing turmoil in the Twin Cities.

His answer was simple: while most states are working with federal agents, Minnesota’s top leaders are refusing to help.

Since early January, nearly 3,000 federal agents from ICE and Border Patrol have arrived in Minneapolis and St. Paul. This large-scale operation has sparked protests and heated words between state and federal officials.

Jennings argued that in other parts of the U.S., local police and federal agents are on the same page. He described the process elsewhere as an “orderly transition” where people who entered the country illegally are handed over to federal custody without much trouble.

“You don’t see any chaos,” Jennings said about operations in other states. “It works just fine.”

However, he claims Minnesota is the exception. Jennings pointed the finger directly at Democratic leaders, including Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. He accused them of acting as if federal laws don’t apply within their state borders.

“The only difference in Minnesota is you have Walz and Frey and Flanagan… who simply won’t cooperate,” Jennings stated. He went on to say that their refusal to work with the government creates confusion and makes the situation dangerous.

The tension isn’t just coming from one side. Local officials have been very vocal about their opposition to the federal crackdown.

Back in December, Mayor Frey stated clearly that city police would not help with federal immigration enforcement. Governor Walz took it a step further during a recent livestream. He urged residents to film ICE agents and described the federal presence as an “occupation.” He also accused agents of harsh tactics, including dragging pregnant women, and criticized the policies of President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Jennings dismissed these claims as “propaganda” and said the resistance is purely political.

“He’s the chief law enforcement officer of the United States, and he has to enforce the law in all 50,” Jennings said, referring to the President.

The conflict has had serious real-world consequences. The Department of Justice has opened an investigation to see if Governor Walz and Mayor Frey actually broke the law by obstructing federal officers.

This legal battle comes at a sensitive time. On January 7, an ICE officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good during an enforcement operation. The shooting led to conflicting narratives and a wave of anti-ICE protests and has kept the state on edge. READ: New Graphic POV Video Released In Deadly Minneapolis ICE Shooting

For now, the standoff continues. Federal agents remain in the state, local leaders continue to resist, and observers like Jennings argue that until both sides cooperate, the chaos is likely to continue.
