A missing person case turned into a homicide investigation this week after authorities discovered the dismembered remains of a 71-year-old man inside three suitcases.
Jorge Vazquez Escutia was reported missing after he was last seen around 12:30 a.m. on August 4, 2026, near the 8600 block of Hal Court in Orange County, Florida. Relatives grew concerned when he could not be located, noting that Escutia had a history of memory loss.
When Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies searched the residence, they found his wallet, cellphone, and keys, along with blood at the scene.
Within 24 hours, investigators recovered three suitcases containing Escutia’s remains along White Road, a street near his home. Officials said one suitcase held the victim’s head, while two others contained additional remains wrapped in tarps. DNA testing confirmed the blood found at the home belonged to Escutia.
Authorities subsequently arrested Escutia’s stepson, identified by police as Proano, on murder charges linked to the killing and dismemberment.
“We have tragic news to share today. We can confirm that 71-year-old Jorge Vazquez Escutia has been murdered, and deputies have arrested his stepson in this killing,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “There are no outstanding suspects, and there is no threat to the community. Our thoughts are with Mr. Escutia’s loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
According to investigators, home surveillance footage showed a man in black clothing scale Escutia’s backyard wall, remain inside for several hours, and then wheel away suitcases. Cellphone data placed Proano at Escutia’s house during the timeframe of the break-in and later tracked him along the route where the suitcases were dumped.
Deputies also cited additional evidence, including a voicemail left for Escutia’s wife by someone claiming to be Proano’s friend, who stated that Proano admitted to killing his stepfather. A second witness told investigators that Proano had reached out requesting help related to the incident.
The discovery unsettled residents in the surrounding neighborhood.
“To hear that he’s been found dead, that’s really close to home because he was that neighborhood guy for close to 20 years,” neighbor Patrick Washington said.
Sheriff’s officials stated that deputies hold additional evidence connecting Proano to the homicide, though further details have not been publicly released.
